From the Movies
The canine-snouted Barada was one of many violent underlings in Jabba the Hutt's court. The unsophisticated brute preferred to let his weapon do the talking. He was one of the skiff guards aboard the prison transport that brought Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Chewbacca to their would-be execution. When Skywalker turned the tables on his captors, Barada was one of the first to go tumbling into the ravenous Sarlacc.
From the Expanded Universe
Barada, like many young Klatooinians, spent much of his life toiling away as an indentured servant. Little more than property, Barada was won by Jabba the Hutt in a rigged sabacc game. Rather than give the Klatooinian his freedom, Jabba kept the dim-witted youth in his employ. The shrewd Hutt kept Barada forever in his debt by paying him a pittance yet charging him room and board.
Despite the lack of freedom, Barada nonetheless found purpose in working for the Hutt. Barada worked his way up Jabba's vehicle pool, eventually becoming captain of the unkempt fleet. Barada took charge, becoming responsible for the procurement, modification, crew, and care of all of Jabba's repulsorlift vehicles.
Behind the Scenes
Barada's name comes from the 1951 classic sci-fi film, The Day the Earth Stood Still, in which the mysterious alien robot Gort spoke the cryptic phrase "Klaatu, Barada, Nikto."
